The Canon BG-E3 was released June 14th, 2010 for Canon Digital EOS Rebel XT and XTi cameras (also known as 350D cameras). It provides the typical vertical shutter release as well as doubling the battery capacity of the camera. You can use the camera’s original battery and a second battery—in any state of charge—or a tray that can hold 6-AA batteries.
The AA battery tray is a fascinating sculpture of plastic and gold plated (looking) contacts. It is the first battery grip I have collected that has the AA-tray and doesn’t have the camera battery tray.
Looking inside the battery compartment you can see how detailed the original casting was. Taking the care to use a web instead of a solid casting, chrome plating the inside of the tripod screw and it looks like more gold plated contacts all contribute to the feeling some real care and expense was taken in this Canon product.
