2026-07-25 Broken Canon PowerShot A2300

 
    This Canon PowerShot A2300 (introduced in the first months of 2012) came to me broken. In my arrogance I thought I could fix a little problem it had closing its lens cover. I might have been right in my confidence if it had been just a little problem with the lens cover. In reality this poor camera had been dropped or sat on one or two times too many. 
    It will erect itself—and pretty snappily too!—but turning it off causes the camera to make regular clicking noises as a drive gear skips against a large gear used to collapse the tubes of the zoom lens. I can use the camera as long as I remember the poor thing needs help closing. Just a gentle pressure on the front and the camera turns off fine.
    
    I have taken photographs with this camera and they are very good. Here is an example. These flowers were taken inside my back porch at ISO 200, 200 sec and f/5.6 The 16.0 Mega Pixel image makes a 5 M JPEG file.
    

    It is a slim camera with really nicely done large button controls.The screen area is the thickest depth while the part you hold is slimmer.
    
    The top has a well protected on/off button just to the right of the label. The zoom toggle surounds the large silver shutter button. As usual the zoom control doubles for use during playback so you can blow up the image while checking for sharpness or shrink the individual image to see multiple images together.

  • internal flash reaches three meters at the wide zoom setting
  • there are two accessory flash built for this camera—the HF-DC1 and HF-DC2

  • shutter speeds can vary from 15 to 1/2000 seconds
  • camera can take images when new person enters group (face recognition)
  • “Digital IS” takes three shots and combines the sharpest bits—result 4 M images at high ISO’s
  • camera has a help button
  • camera weighs 125 g (4.41 oz)
  • “Smart Auto” mode automatically sets best scene mode for the shot
  • “Live View” has three sliders—brightness dark/light, saturation neutral/vivid and white balance cool/warm
  • battery provides 210 shots per charge

2026-06-23 Olympus Camedia D-535 Digital Camera

The Olympus Camedia D-535 digital camera is a cute little camera, introduced September 16, 2004. It was modestly priced at about $175 list.   It had the motto, “one button/one function.” There were four scene modes available, as well as movies (QuickTime / 320x240 at 15 fps for as long as the memory held out) and “Program-Auto” on the rotary dial. A four direction with a center “OK” allowed rapid access to (starting at 12 and going clockwise)— EV adjustments plus and minus 2EV in ½ EV steps Macro (including Super-Macro allowing shooting down to 2 cm (0.79”) Reset Self-timer (12 seconds)      The three buttons under the 1.5 inch (130,000 dot) screen (from left) are delete, menu access and flash modes. 2026-03-20-Manfrotto monopods

  Sometimes collecting is a matter of persistence.       The Manfrotto “GRUPPO” 434SSB monopod (shown top) showed up one day at my local thrift store. They had a price tag of $25 on it. I had bought the lower Manfrotto Compact MMC3-01 monopod at the same thrift store for $3. So I asked, “Why so much?” They answered their “expert” had found it sold for $200 on the internet. I find experts—who almost never clerk in the thrift store, so are unreachable—hard to deal with. There is also the matter someone might actually pay them $25 for a 2.27 kg (5 pound) aluminum pole, so I decided to let the Gods-of-Collecting decide if I was going to ever own it. For weeks I would pick it up, check the price tag to see if they had come to their senses, and return it to the shelf.
